Gum Recession and Tissue Grafting in Seattle

SERVICES

What is Gum Recession?

Gum recession invites bacteria to build up and weaken your jawbone. Gum recession happens when the gum tissue that surrounds your teeth wears away and/or pulls back.

Receding gums cause small pockets to form between your teeth and gums. Once those pockets begin to form, bacteria starts to build up causing red, swollen, and bleeding gums. If left untreated gum recession can cause tooth loss.

Why Do Gums Recede?

Gum Disease

Gum disease is the most common cause of gum recession.

Genetics

Some families are genetically prone to gum disease, which can cause gum recession.

Aggressive Tooth Brushing

Use a soft bristled brush and don’t brush too hard to avoid receding gums.

Poor Dental Hygiene

People who don’t brush or floss are susceptible to plaque and tartar buildup leading to gum recession.

Hormones

When women go through puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, hormone levels change making gum recession more common.

Tissue Grafting for Gum Recession and How it Works

Gum or tissue grafting is the most common treatment for receding gums. Dental Specialties Northwest uses a variety of solutions for tissue grafting, and will recommend the best one for your particular needs.

How it Works

Free gingival grafts are used to increase gum tissue width protecting the underlying bone while preventing future tissue recession.

How it Works

This type of gum graft covers root surfaces and increases the gum tissue around your tooth or teeth. Connective tissue grafting also prevents further root decay in the same tooth while preventing additional gum recession.

How it Works

With enough gum tissue, Dr. Sweeney, Dr. Spoor and Dr. Yeung are able to perform a pedicle graft. This will be identified during your initial examination.

Gum Grafting Benefits

Gum grafting helps prevent additional bone loss and tooth loss. Tissue grafting also decreases root sensitivity and can sometimes eliminate it completely. Gum and tissue grafting also enhance the beauty of your smile while maintaining healthy teeth and gums.
